Hey, ladies!
So glad to be back with you today. Check this out — you are already on Day 13 of 40! I’m cheering for you! I pray this study is helping you continue or create a life-changing habit of reading the Bible daily.
Trying to fulfill our longing for security outside of Jesus can be disastrous and influence us to make poor decisions. Because of our instinct to protect ourselves, our attempts for security can show up as attempts to ensure safety.
In today’s reading, we find this very situation. The Israelites longed for “safety” and chose to have a king rather than rest in the security found in God. Placing the fulfillment of their longing in someone who was just as flawed and susceptible to sin as they were, the children of Israel would eventually regret their decision. It caused much more pain than they ever could have imagined. (1 Samuel 8:18)
We place ourselves in similar situations, don’t we?
When our longing for physical, emotional and personal security becomes more important than our relationship with Jesus, we, too, create a recipe for disaster. It’s not easy to release our concerns and fears about the past, present and future to a God we cannot see, hoping He will help us when we want Him to. But He lovingly and patiently calls us to come to Him so that He can give us rest. (Matthew 11:28-30)
As we get into our homework today, I encourage you to pause and identify areas where you have been trying to protect yourself and why — in your relationships, in your job, in your home, etc. — and ask God to give you rest in Him.
Longing for security is a large part of my life. Friends, I’m so glad we don’t have to have this all figured out right away, aren’t you?
