How To Think Differently {Week 2}

July 9, 2021
“Get Out of Your Head” by Jennie Allen | P31 OBS Week 2 Quote

Happy Friday, friends!

What a week we’ve had studying Get Out of Your Head! Thinking about what we think about is such a process, right? It has required hard work, too. I’m glad that Jennie is honest and vulnerable. She admits that, though it may not be easy, it’s worth it. I’m even more glad that God is here to help us! We’d be lost in this process without Him.

Some points from this week’s reading continue to come to my mind. Let’s take a closer look at them now.

Share. Did you catch the first thing Jennie did that helped her start to break free from toxic thoughts? She shared what she was thinking with people she trusted. She chose to speak up about how she’d been suffering in silence. Her friends reminded her of who she is — one of God’s precious daughters. They prayed and fasted with her. With that support came hope.

Choose. Remember when she finally told us the thought that can successfully interrupt every negative thought pattern: I have a choice.

Those four words are so powerful, y’all! When I first heard them, I didn’t believe them! You know what, though? Through much prayer and reading the Bible, I discovered how true they are. Though the devil attempted to keep me stuck, blaming myself for where I am now, God’s Word kept me from following that spiral of toxic thoughts. His forgiveness covers all the past choices I did and didn’t make; His grace and power can, right now, in this moment, help me make better choices.

Declare. Jennie found scriptures to repeat, meditate on and hold to. Believing who God says she is grew her faith. God lovingly showed her truths she could think instead of lies. She learned just how powerful, active and alive God’s Word is, and how it mysteriously heals. The lesson? Declare God’s Word first, and let your thoughts catch up to His Truth. (Not the other way around.)

Act. Here’s where hard work comes in. Jennie began to live aware of her thoughts and actively started to capture them. Capturing thoughts exposed them. Exposing them made it much easier to see they were lies. You and I can do this, too. To start, simply jot down how you feel and why you feel that way. Or you can grab your "Anxious Thoughts Guide" and work through it. The next steps are to pray and search the Scriptures, trusting God to help us swap our toxic thoughts for His Truth.

Next week we’ll begin talking more specifically about choices we can make to help us stop the negative spiral once and for all.

See you then!
