Let’s Talk Codependency (Session 5)

February 22, 2023

Welcome to Wednesday, my friend! It’s time for our counseling appointment with Jim Cress. Before you watch, take a quick look back at Jim’s note in Chapter 10, where he provides background information and a helpful definition of the word “codependence.”

It’s one of those words that people seem to use vaguely, maybe in the context of alcoholism or drug addiction, but everybody kind of means something different by it. And don’t we mostly hear it used to describe other people rather than ourselves?

Now, let’s learn from Jim’s wisdom.

Wow, what great information! I especially appreciate the part when Jim provides a few signs of codependency. I recognized a few of them in myself and my relationships. And now I understand well that codependency occurs in all kinds of relationships.

But the part I’m still working through and praying about is the simple question Jim suggested we ask ourselves when we realize we’re enabling someone else: Would I really be OK if this person doesn’t change?

Tough one, isn’t it? But that’s why we’re here, doing this study so we can learn together.

P.S. Comment on today’s post for a chance to win one of eight copies of the Good Boundaries and Goodbyes study guide. The study guide takes what we’re learning a bit deeper and comes with streaming access to all of Lysa’s teaching videos. Winners will be selected and notified with further instructions via reply to their comment on Friday, February 24!

Let’s Chat!

Relationships can get messy. Jim helps us see them as a beautiful gift from God. What is one thing you can do if you realize you have codependent tendencies that are interfering with a healthy relationship?
