In God I Trust or in Me I Trust? {Week 2}

January 31, 2020
PSALM 52:8b | "I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever." | Proverbs 31 Online Bible Studies | Week 2 Verse | #TrustworthyStudy #P31OBS

Hey P31 OBSers, Brandy here! It’s time to wrap up Week 2. Are you ready?

Think back to when you were a child. When your loved one told you not to cross the street, you probably listened. Why? You trusted them. You knew they loved you and wanted to keep you safe.

Was there a time you were told to do something, but you didn’t listen? Why not? Often, when I haven’t listened, it’s because I wanted something different. Whether I realize it or not, I trusted myself more than the other person. Has that ever been your reason for not obeying too?

King Jeroboam did this as well. Rather than allowing God's people to travel to the temple for worship as instructed by God, he took matters into his own hands and created idols for them to worship. In other words, just like we do sometimes, he trusted himself over God.

There’s hope, though! Lysa teaches that when we trust ourselves more than we trust God, we can:

  • Reflect and confess to God where our motivations have shifted.
  • Ask for His help in realigning our heart and intentions.
  • Constantly check ourselves and be honest about what we see.
  • Pray and apply His wisdom in our lives.

I don’t know about you, but I’m exhausted from trusting myself over God. I’m ready to take some small actions from Lysa’s list to trust in the steadfast love of God more, like our Verse of the Week (Psalm 52:8b) says! With His help, we can do this, friends!

Reflect and Respond:

Using Lysa's list above as a starting point, what’s one action you will take to get back on track with trusting Him?

For Your Weekend:
In Session 3 of the Trustworthy videos, Lysa teaches how fear, self-promotion and our desire to be in control can keep us from trusting God. It’s just under 20 minutes. You can take notes as you watch starting on page 88. (Special thanks to LifeWay Publishers for making this available to us for FREE during our study. Please note: this video was only available on our blog through March 6. If you wish, you can purchase the videos here.)
